WanGP Runs Alibaba's Wan 2.1 Video AI on 8GB GPUs

A new open-source runtime launcher called WanGP enables developers to run Alibaba's heavy Wan 2.1 video generation models locally on consumer GPUs with as little as 8GB of VRAM.

Repackaged checkpoints hosted by Hugging Face developer DeepBeepMeep allow the WanGP runtime launcher to run Alibaba's massive 14-billion-parameter Wan 2.1 video model on ordinary consumer hardware. The project recorded 419,608 downloads over the last month, demonstrating significant demand for local, open-source video generation. Beyond Wan 2.1 and 2.2, the consolidated user interface handles multiple popular open models, including Hunyuan, LTX-2, MiniMax H3, Flux, Qwen, and Kandinsky.

Using optimized GGUF Q4_K_M quantizations sized between 2.7 GB and 5.6 GB alongside ONNX and safetensors files, WanGP lowers hardware barriers by shifting work between system memory and video RAM. This architecture slashes peak VRAM requirements by up to 50 percent without changing standard precision checkpoints. For instance, the v17.17 software update drops the VRAM required for a 15-second 1080p MiniMax H3 video from 25GB to 11GB. Under this system, a 14B Wan model can output a five-second 480p clip on an 8GB card, while a 12GB setup can produce up to 128 frames, or about eight seconds of footage.

This optimization extends accessibility across older graphics architectures, bringing functional compatibility to legacy Nvidia GPUs such as the GTX 10XX and RTX 20XX series, as well as AMD RDNA 2 through RDNA 4 hardware. The toolkit packages a web UI, automated model fetching, and LoRA support into a single workflow. For AI practitioners, these efficiency gains let mid-range graphics cards like the 12GB RTX 3060 or 8GB RTX 2060 Super tackle heavy generation pipelines. However, operators must monitor VAE encoding and decoding phases, where temporary spikes up to 12GB of memory usage can induce bottlenecks or out-of-memory errors during data transfers over system RAM.
