Greenberg Traurig Rolls Out CoCounsel Legal Globally

On August 26, 2026, global law firm Greenberg Traurig announced the firmwide deployment of CoCounsel Legal, an agentic AI assistant developed by Thomson Reuters. Rather than launching a restricted pilot, the AmLaw 20 firm is making the system available to its entire legal workforce of approximately 3,200 lawyers across 51 offices worldwide. This rollout follows a four-year collaborative relationship during which the firm's attorneys participated in beta testing and helped shape the platform's development.

CoCounsel Legal distinguishes itself through agentic execution, meaning it can plan, research, reason, and draft documents while adapting to new facts. The system's outputs are grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law databases, utilizing 35 million West Key Number classifications and 3.9 million Precision Research attributes. Key features include Brief Builder for generating court-ready drafts, Workspaces for session continuity, and Tabular Analysis, which can analyze up to 10,000 documents against 100 questions.

For practicing attorneys, this deployment bridges the gap between public legal databases and internal firm knowledge. By integrating with DeepJudge, the platform allows lawyers to search their own firm's historical work product alongside Thomson Reuters' legal databases. It also integrates directly with daily tools like iManage, NetDocuments, SharePoint, HighQ, Box, and Microsoft 365 applications, reducing the friction of adopting new software.

To manage risks, Greenberg Traurig has established strict governance protocols. All AI-generated materials must be reviewed by the handling attorney and a supervising shareholder before reaching clients, who are informed of the technology's use. Furthermore, the system is configured so that models do not train on client data. This massive deployment intensifies the competition in the legal AI space, arriving just after Google introduced legal-specific agents to Gemini Enterprise.
