LLNL Deploys Anthropic's Claude to 10,000 Researchers

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has expanded its partnership with Anthropic to roll out Claude for Enterprise across its entire facility. This expansion will grant advanced AI access to approximately 10,000 scientists, researchers, and operational staff. Representing one of the largest deployments of Claude for Enterprise within the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratory network, the initiative aims to bolster research in nuclear deterrence, energy security, and materials science.

The enterprise version of the AI model provides LLNL researchers with a massive context window capable of processing hundreds of documents, complex datasets, or entire codebases containing over 100,000 lines of code in a single query. To meet the stringent demands of government and national security environments, the platform integrates robust security protocols. These include single sign-on (SSO), audit logging, role-based access controls, and end-to-end encryption.

Scientists plan to apply Claude across multiple disciplines. In computational biology, researchers will process vast simulation datasets to advance biosecurity and accelerate biological threat detection. In advanced manufacturing, the AI will analyze 3D printing processes to speed up materials discovery. Other applications include optimizing high-performance computing workflows, analyzing data from the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC) for emergency response, and advancing fusion energy research following LLNL's historic 2022 fusion ignition.

This full-scale rollout follows a successful pilot phase, which included the first-ever AI Jam with U.S. National Labs and an aiEDGE for Innovation Day in March. During that event, roughly 3,200 LLNL employees tested Claude's capabilities firsthand. According to Greg Herweg, Chief Technology Officer at LLNL, the expanded partnership demonstrates how frontier AI can "amplify the capabilities of world-class researchers" tackling humanity's most pressing challenges.
